The Train (1964) at the
West Chester Railroad
Movie critic Doug Bost says:
"This is one of my favorite movies ever, a totally under-rated action classic. Why it's not always referred to as 'The Motherf***ing Train' is beyond me."
Paul Scofield is the prototypical dapper, erudite, and contemptuous Nazi, trying to steal a train full of French art treasures. The only problem? BURT LANCASTER, baby.
"Labiche! Here's your prize, Labiche. Some of the greatest paintings in the world. Does it please you, Labiche? Give you a sense of excitement in just being near them? A painting means as much to you as a string of pearls to an ape."
Here's the trailer, from the days when all you needed was a strong typeface and a gritty five-sentence description of how the movie was gonna make you feel:
We'll be screening this movie on the side of a by-god, gigantic big and greasy locomotive belonging to the West Chester Railroad, West Chester's collection of square-jawed, two-fisted train enthusiasts.
What to Bring
- Warm, layered clothes. It might be warm, it might be cool, it might be arctic-freaking-cold. Dress warmly, and bring a blanket!
- A blanket or chairs, especially chairs. The ground is covered with gravel and cinders from the Good Old Days of railroading. Plus railroad spikes and whatnot.
- A flashlight. The footing is rough, and there's lots of Big Pointy Metal things around. You did sign the disclaimer, right?
Rain: if it rains, we'll still show the movie, just under a tent. Or under the boxcar. Or something. I'll post updates (if any) to this page by 3PM Saturday afternoon.
Map and Directions
If you Google the
West Chester Railroad, you'll get the address where they take on passengers for the Easter Bunny Express, and we won't be there.
We're showing the movie at the WCRR yard, which is few hundred yards down the tracks at the intersection of Nields and Adams street. Park in the gravel lot, and walk towards the collection of locomotives.
The big empty lot to the northeast is the old
Wyeth Pharmaceutical brownfield.
